I’ll admit it — I’m stumped. Recently, parishioners at St. Adalbert in St. Paul invited me to help them identify some saints featured in their stained glass windows. I was able to get most of them — St. Barbara gives viewers a clue with a tower standing behind her, and St. Dominic has his signature dog carrying a torch. However, the saint in one window is a mystery — and not only to me. I’ve asked armchair stained glass historians and academic hagiographers, and no one has been able to identify this saint.
The best guess so far is St. Catherine of Alexandria, but there is no spiked wheel — her primary attribute — to be found.
So, Catholic Spirit readers, I’m asking for your help. Do you know who
she is? She holds a palm and a sword (likely indicating she was
martyred), and a third object (which may be a book, a canvas, a
carpenter’s square, or a picture frame). To see the whole window, visit
