When someone asks me if I’ve seen any good movies lately, I usually chuckle before I answer. I don’t get to the theater much, but when I do, it’s typically to see an animated film that my young son has begged Mom and Dad to take him to.

Joe Towalski
Most recently, we saw “Toy Story 3,” the latest installment in the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toy gang that belong to a boy named Andy.

In this sequel, Andy is getting ready for college and many of the toys are destined for life in the attic.

They escape, however, to a local day care center, where they hope to once again be appreciated. But life there turns out to be a nightmare, and Woody sets out to rescue his friends. He accomplishes his mission, of course, and the movie has a happy, although bittersweet, ending with the toys finding a new home where they are loved and played with.

On the surface, the movie is 103 minutes of wholesome entertainment — complete with action and a storyline that made me laugh and even shed a tear. On a deeper level, “Toy Story 3” has valuable lessons to convey about the importance of family and friendship.

I left the theater, however, reflecting on something else — something you wouldn’t necessarily expect a high-tech cartoon to stir thoughts about: the ultimate meaning and purpose of life.

toy.jpgAnother kind of value

The characters in the “Toy Story” trilogy spend a lot of time worrying about their ultimate fate. For the toys, life, so to speak, is wonderful as long as their child-owners play with them. But as kids grow older, their once-beloved toys are relegated to garage sales and storage boxes.

In other words, when the toys have outlived their usefulness, they also lose their value.

This utilitarian ethic might be fine for toys, but unfortunately it’s often evident in the day-to-day life of us humans as well in the way we think about certain people and in how society treats them.

» How often do we view those who are elderly, chronically ill or otherwise diminished as burdens on our resources rather than as blessings who still have wisdom to share and lessons — even silent ones — to teach?

» How often does our society turn its back on children in the womb — those who have no voice but a great deal of potential that will never be realized because of our culture’s acceptance of abortion?

» How often do we think of the homeless, the unemployed, the struggling single mother and the immigrant hoping to start a new life as drains on our society’s economic well-being rather than as fellow human beings in need of our help? How often are we tempted to judge their worth rather than offer them Christian compassion?

» How often do we use one another — just as we once used toys — for our own pleasure, to satisfy our own “needs,” to get ahead in a career, to gain material wealth at the expense of others? How often do we walk away without any concern for the consequences of our decisions or the impact of our actions on others?

Knowing our purpose

We, like the “Toy Story” gang, can fall into utilitarian thinking. But there is one big difference between the toys and us: We are created in the image and likeness of a God who loves us unconditionally, not for what we can do or what worth we have to others, but because we are his children.

God’s love imparts a dignity toys don’t have, and it clarifies our purpose in life: to love God and our neighbors as ourselves — no matter what their situation in life.

We need to remind ourselves of that purpose from time to time because it will help us to face the challenges of this life, to better see the face of Christ in those we meet, and to prepare us for the journey to our next life with God in heaven — or as Buzz might say, “to infinity and beyond.”
