If you are interested in deepening your connection with the people of Africa, set aside some time, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, for an information session about the 2011 partnership delegation visit to Kitui, Kenya. The gathering will take place at the Hayden Building, 328 W. Kellogg Ave. in St. Paul.

The delegation visit, set for June 28 to July 12, 2011 is a part of the on-going solidarity partnership that began in 2004 bet­ween the Arch­dio­cese of St. Paul and Min­nea­polis and the Diocese of Kitui. Bishop Lee Piché is scheduled to accompany the group on the trip.

A priesthood anniversary to remember Print E-mail

It was supposed to be a quiet, uneventful gathering at a local rectory to celebrate the 65th anniversary of priesthood ordination for Msgr. James Lavin, now residing with the Little Sisters of the Poor.

When I arrived, the pastor and parochial vicar, two neighboring priests, a transitional deacon, three seminarians and Msgr. Lavin had already assembled. Half the crew was busy in the kitchen preparing beef stroganoff and layering asparagus tips on a pan to be warmed.  With pasta ready to boil, we all retired to the living room to pray Evening Prayer.

Holy Childhood School celebrates 63 years of history Print E-mail

Holy Childhood School in St. Paul celebrated 63 years of history Aug. 8, following the closing of the school this past spring.

The school began its first year in the fall of 1947, although the school building was not fully completed. Students went to class at the nearby fairgrounds until October, when the building could be used.

I trust that everyone who reads this column has had an opportunity to take some vacation time this summer. As Catholics, our stewardship for our families and for others also extends to the care that we show to our own physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological health. As human beings, we need rest and relaxation in order to balance the demands of our everyday life.

I, myself, just returned from a three-week “working vacation” in Michigan. I say “working” because for the past three years, I have had the office send me my mail each week while I am away. I am also in touch with staff almost every day.
