Discussions about the morality of stem cell research often focus on the differences between adult stem cells and stem cells derived from embryos. The adult variety, such as those derived from bone marrow or umbilical cords, are already providing an impressive array of treatments and cures for sick people, while the embryonic kind are not. Adult stem cells can be obtained without crossing any moral boundaries, whereas embryonic stem cells cannot, because they are obtained by destroying young human beings who are still in their embryonic stages of growth.

I read with interest your editorial regarding “Small Children at Mass?  We need more of them” [July 29].  I would like to offer another way to look at it.

The Sacred Liturgy of the Mass is for adults. Right? Why then, would parents subject themselves, the people around them and the children to an adult function?

In the old days, that meant landing a job with one of the major companies. Employment in the Fortune 500 meant work for life, health insurance and a good pension.

But that’s not the way it is anymore. Big companies lay people off all the time. And it isn’t just the newbies who get let go; people with decades of service to a single company commonly find themselves looking for work after a big company decides to downsize.

Small companies lay people off, too.

The Catholic Spirit invited readers to reflect the value of the church community in light of novelist Anne Rice’s recent decision to “quit Christianity.” These are some of the responses that we received.

The article about community [Aug. 12] really struck a chord with me. I’m a proponent of community. I don’t know if there is a danger in “going it alone” spiritually, but I believe it’s a harder road. Anne Rice’s announcement about quitting Christianity but not Christ struck me as an oxymoron!
