“I just want to show you. I'll be back in a moment.” Msgr. John Radano got up from his chair and left the room. Two minutes later, he returned with three large volumes containing the reports from four decades of formal ecumenical dialogues between Catholics and other Christian denominations. A fourth one is to be published soon, he said.

“[The reports] are made available, so people can use them,” he said. “A lot can be done. A lot should be done.”

An expert on ecumenism,  Msgr. Radano finished a 24-year appointment to the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity in 2008. He spent the spring 2010 semester at St. Paul Seminary as a visiting scholar. Most recently, he coordinated a June 17-19 conference on ecumenism at the seminary. Titled “A Century of Ecumenism,” the international conference explored achievements and future goals for 11 formal dialogues between the Catholic Church and other Christians.

The “century” marker in the conference’s title refers to the 1910 World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland that launched international ecumenical dialogue efforts. Although the Catholic Church was not part of the earliest dialogues, the Second Vatican Council recognized the need for ecumenical understanding and the church has been an important voice since.

The following includes excerpts from an June 21 Catholic Spirit interview with Msgr. Radano.
